For RAMM (Read-a-Million Minutes) this year, the focus was on the Iditarod. The Iditarod is a dogsled race across the state of Alaska that covers 1,100 miles. The mushers have to persevere through cold weather, take care of their dogs, and attempt to get to Nome. Each student was assigned a musher and their progress was tracked every day to determine what place they were in. The winner took close to ten days to finish the race.
Over the four week period, the students and staff were asked to keep track of the minutes that they read. Each week the minutes were counted and tracked with dogsleds in the hallway. The final results from our last week of reading saw Team #5 winning with a total of 11,630 minutes. Team #6 finished in second place with a total of 8,511 minutes read. Team #3 was close behind with a total of 8,103 minutes read to place third. Team #2 finished in fourth place with a total of 7,696 minutes read. Team #1 moved up to a fifth place finish with a total of 6,503 minutes read. Team #4 finished in sixth place, having read a total of 5,774 minutes. Over the four week period, ICS students and staff read a total of 48,217 minutes.
On April 3, the students and staff gathered in the gym and enjoyed some refreshments. As they ate, they talked about the books they had read over the four week period. The students also held their own “Iditarod” race using scooters as their sleds. Each group was timed as they traveled around the school to get to different checkpoints on their scooters (sleds).
